Germany: ‘We are risking everything we have achieved’ – Merkel on COVID surge

Germany, Berlin

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the “difficult months of the year” in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic are coming and appealed to all citizens to respect the rules, as she delivered a rare passionate speech at the Bundestag, in Berlin on Wednesday.

"We all want life as we knew it back and of course especially the young people in our country, but we are risking everything we have achieved in the last months. We must not let it come to the point where nationwide restrictions are once again causing high economic and emotional losses, where people in hospitals or nursing homes have to die all alone because their loved ones are not able to shake their hands when they say goodbye," Merkel said.

"We are currently experiencing how caution is waning as everyone is looking for closeness again, for touching, for being together, for celebrating with family and friends or in public places, simply for being carefree. I feel this myself, I am no different from others," the Chancellor told the parliament.

Merkel also defended borrowing money as "the right decision" to get through the pandemic, before the opposition criticised her budget policy during the debate in the Bundestag.

“This is a long road, we are not yet at the end of the pandemic,” Merkel said, before ending her speech with an appeal: “Now we have to show that we can continue to act patiently and rationally to save lives. Now we have to understand that it still depends on each and every one of us. That is what I ask of you."
