Thousands of travellers could be seen flooding Beijing's West railway station on Wednesday, as they got a head-start on the upcoming "Golden Week" holiday period, when millions are expected to visit friends and family.

According to the Chinese authorities, 600 million domestic trips are expected to be taken during eight-day break, in comparison to 782 million trips made in 2019.

Passengers expressed their satisfaction with the measures still in place to curb the pandemic.

"I can’t say I'm not worried about the virus at all. But the government pays attention to the prevention and citizens follow the prevention measures as well, so I'm not so worried," said one traveller.

The holiday period is set to last from the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday and China's National Day on October 1 to October 8.
