Armenia: Yerevan locals discuss Nagorno-Karabakh conflict

Armenia, Yerevan
October 1, 2020 at 01:25 GMT -00:00 · Published

Yerevan residents commented on the recent escalation of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, Wednesday.

Some residents believed it was Azerbaijan who started the recent escalation, with one resident saying “naturally, the attacking side is Azerbaijan and, of course, Turkey."

According to resident Grigor Asatyan, the events "are all games of the great powers. In particular, Turkey is moving Azerbaijan forward. It's all about power, money, oil, gas.”

Fighting in the disputed region broke out on Sunday when Azeri and ethnic Armenian soldiers exchanged fire. It's been the heaviest clashes in the region since 2016 with dozens of casualties reported. Both sides blame each other for the escalation.

Earlier Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan pledged to stand by Azerbaijan in the conflict. The Nagorno-Karabakh region is internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan but has an independent government led by a majority group of ethnic Armenians.
