Armenia: Yerevan says Azeri forces suffer heavy losses in Nagorno-Karabakh

Armenian Defence Ministry representative Artsrun Hovhannisyan said in a briefing in Yerevan on Tuesday that the Armenian military had inflicted heavy losses on Azerbaijani forces in clashes over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.

“Clashes took place during the whole night on the border with Nagorno-Karabakh region. The enemy used armoured pieces of equipment, drones, and sustained losses: about 60 soldiers and [a number] of pieces of equipment,” he announced.

Azerbaijani artillery and aircraft have pounded Armenian territories, including the small border town of Vardenis, he said, telling Baku to brace itself for a “harsh response.”

Armenia’s human rights ombudsman Arman Tatoyan on his part confirmed the deaths of two more civilians.

“Children, women, and elderly people were hurt. An elderly woman and a child died. Among the injured there are dozens of women, children, and elderly people,” he stated.

Baku has dismissed Armenia's claims to have caused heavy losses on Azerbaijani forces. It has also refuted reports that Turkish troops were supporting Azerbaijani forces.

Ankara has publicly supported the Azeri cause, with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan pledging full support and calling on Yerevan to vacate “the occupied territory of Azerbaijan”.

Fighting in the disputed region broke out on Sunday when Azeri and ethnic Armenian soldiers exchanged fire. It's been the heaviest clashes in the region since 2016 with dozens of casualties reported.

The Nagorno-Karabakh region is internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan but has an independent government led by a majority group of ethnic Armenians.
