Armenia: Helicopters transport wounded from Nagorno-Karabakh to Yerevan

Wounded soldiers and civilians from Nagorno-Karabakh were transported by helicopters to Yerevan’s Erebuni medical centre on Monday following clashes between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the disputed region.

Armenian Health Minister Arsen Torosyan, who accompanied the wounded, said, "almost all soldiers and civilians who needed to be hospitalised for at least a few days were moved from the state of Artsakh to the Republic of Armenia in two directions: north to Vardenis and south to Goris. Intermediate points have been set up in Goris and Vardenis hospitals to assess the condition of the wounded, in complex cases, it will be decided which hospitals they should be transported to."

According to the minister, the hospitals on the frontline were emptied in case if new wounded need hospitalisation.

The Defence Ministry of the unrecognised republic of Nagorno-Karabakh reported that following the clashes 84 soldiers had been killed, while the Armenian Ministry of Defence reported that 200 soldiers had been wounded, 80 of them transported to Yerevan hospitals.

Meanwhile, the Azerbaijani authorities said that 19 civilians had been wounded in shelling by the Armenian side.

Both Armenia and Azerbaijan have declared martial law and mobilised their armed forces after the clashes escalated on Sunday.

Earlier Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed support to the Azeri authorities and blamed Yerevan for escalating the conflict.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs called for the "sides to cease fire immediately and to commence negotiations in order to stabilise the situation."

Leaders of France, Austria, Germany, and other European countries also called for a suspension of military operations and for the start of negotiations.
