A daughter of coalminer came out on top of country's nationwide university entry exam, becoming the first among over 170,000 students and prompting congratulations from former Afghani President Hamid Karzai.

Footage shows the moment when the proud father of 18-year-old Shamsia Alizada returned from work at the mine in Samangan province to Kabul on Sunday, to congratulate his daughter for her success.

"I was very happy and I did not even expect to hear this fantastic news in my life", said Mohammad Nasim, Shamsia's father.

Shamsia herself said that despite the tough economic situation in the country and her humble origins, she didn't feel in need as she always had the family by her side.

"I did not lack anything materially or spiritually because my family supported and encouraged me", Shamsia said remembering that Mohammed moved the family to Kabul to ensure the girl's education.

The news comes at a time when the government in in peace talks with the Taliban, which banned girls from schools during its rule from 1997 to 2001. According to reports, the Taliban has reversed its position on allowing girls in school, but many still fear the rights of women could begin to be curtailed if the influence of the group regrows in the country.

Less than 30 per cent of Afghan women are literate and over two million girls do not have access to education in the country, according to a United Nations report.
