The Azerbaijani Defence Ministry published on Sunday a video of the alleged "shelling of military equipment of the Armenian forces on the contact line in Nagorno-Karabakh."

Ruptly was not able to independently verify the footage.

The Azerbaijani Defence Ministry announced that after the counter-offensive operation of the country’s army “a large number of Armenian troops' manpower and military equipment were destroyed.”

Baku and Yerevan blamed each other for the escalation of the conflict in the border zone

The Armenian Defence Ministry said that Karabakh was targeted by air and missile attacks from Azerbaijan.

According to the press secretary of the president of the unrecognised republic Vahram Poghosyan, the Azerbaijani army shelled civilian settlements, including the capital Stepanakert on Sunday morning.

Meanwhile, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defence announced that the country's army did not attack any civilian settlement on the Armenian side, stressing that the Armenian army launched the attack, in response to which the Azerbaijani army started a counter-offensive.

The Azerbaijani Ministry noted that there were civilian casualties as a result of Armenian attacks on settlements on the borderline.

After the escalation of the conflict, the president of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic region, Arayik Harutyunyan, declared a state of martial law on the territory of the republic.

In a televised address, Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev stressed that his country would not leave Armenia's actions unanswered adding that the “enemy's positions” were being attacked and military equipment had been destroyed.

In response to Baku's statements, Armenian Defence Minister David Tononyan stated that the army of the Republic of Artsakh stopped all enemy attempts at advancing, adding that the Armenian army “is ready to provide any support to ensure the security of the population of Artsakh."

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan declared martial law in the country, as well as general mobilisation.

"Dear compatriots, now, by the decision of the government, martial law and general mobilisation are declared in Armenia. I urge all personnel to come to recruitment offices," he said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed full support to Azerbaijan in connection with the escalation of the conflict with Armenia in Nagorno-Karabakh.

The Russian Foreign Ministry for its part urged both countries “to immediately cease fire and start negotiations in order to stabilise the situation."

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in dialogue with his Armenian counterpart Zohrab Mnatsakanyan offered mediation attempts to help de-escalate the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh.
