USA: Breonna Taylor's family demands release of grand jury transcripts
The attorney representing Breonna Taylor's family, Benjamin Crump, has called for the grand jury transcripts to be released, as he was addressing the press in Louisville on Friday, after one officer was indicted by a Kentucky grand jury for endangering Taylor's neighbours during the fatal shooting.
"Breonna Taylor's entire family is heartbroken, devastated, and outraged, and confused, and bewildered, just like all of us, as to what did Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron present to the grand jury," said Crump.
"That's why we are standing here today, united in solidarity, declaring and demanding that he releases the transcripts of the grand jury proceedings. So we can know if there was anybody giving a voice to Breonna Taylor," he continued.
At the event, Breonna's aunt Bianca Austin delivered a speech on behalf of Tamika Palmer, the mother of Breonna, in which she expressed her lack of faith in the US judiciary system. "What [David Cameron] helped me realise is that it will always be us against them, that we are never safe when it comes to them," she said.
On Wednesday, a Kentucky grand jury decided not to bring homicide charges against police officers involved in the killing of Taylor. The ruling sparked protests all over the US.
Twenty-six-year-old Taylor was killed while sleeping in her bed in on March 13, after police officers broke into her apartment under a 'no-knock warrant' suspecting her to be part of a drug ring. The woman was eventually shot eight times as the officers exchanged gunshots with her boyfriend.
