Belarus: Military pledges allegiance to Lukashenko following inauguration

Belarus, Minsk
September 23, 2020 at 18:25 GMT +00:00 · Published

Military men of Belarus sworn an oath of loyalty to the newly inaugurated President Aleksander Lukashenko, near the Independence Palace in Minsk on Wednesday.

Lukashenko addressed the military personnel outside the Palace, where his unannounced inauguration was held earlier on the day.

“We have prevented a catastrophe with you, foiled the yet another hybrid revolution scenario to shake the very foundations of the Belarusian state,” he highlighted.

The army has “protected the independence and sovereignty” of the country, he added.

Belarus has been rocked by a major political crisis following the re-election of Alexander Lukashenko as head of state last August, an outcome which sparked mass protests in across the country and concerns over human rights abuse from the UN, the EU and various other organisations.

The leader of the Belarusian opposition Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, as well as the authorities of Germany, Slovakia, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, refused to recognise President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko as the head of the republic. Tikhanovskaya had won a little more than 10 percent of the vote and came second in the presidential elections.

The Kremlin preferred not to comment on the inauguration ceremony, although Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed Lukashenko as the legitimate leader of Belarus.

According to official figures, more than 6700 people have been detained in Belarus since the beginning of the protests.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the republic reports about hundreds of victims, including about 130 law enforcement officers. The deaths of three protesters have been officially confirmed.
