Belarus: Lukashenko sworn in for sixth term in unannounced ceremony

Belarus, Minsk

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko was inaugurated for a sixth term in office in an unannounced ceremony in Minsk on Wednesday.

The ceremony took place at the Independence Palace in the capital with several hundred guests in attendance, including deputies of the House of Representatives, heads of state bodies, and other senior officials.

In his speech, Lukashenko highlighted the sovereignty of Belarus that the country got “by divine providence” after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

“We were not just electing the President of the country, we defended our values, our peaceful life, our sovereignty, our independence, and in this regard, we still have a lot to do,” he said.

Belarus has been rocked by a major political crisis following Lukashenko’s re-election as head of state in August, an outcome which sparked mass protests across the country and concerns over human rights abuse from the UN, the EU, and various other organisations.

However, Russia has recognised Lukashenko as a legitimate leader of Belarus.
