Libya: Protesters defy tightened security in Benghazi to protest corruption

Libya, Benghazi
September 21, 2020 at 21:21 GMT +00:00 · Published

Protesters took to the streets in Benghazi on Monday to call for better living conditions in Libya and to decry corruption in "all corners of the state." Police vehicles could be seen next to the protest, as the Libyan National Army set up checkpoints around Benghazi.

"The reason people went out in a protest in this square is to secure their means of living and combat corruption in all government entities. All Libyan officials since 2011 must be hold accountable for corruption," an activist said.

Activists marching outside the Tibesti Hotel also held signs against the presence of LNA forces in the streets, one of them reading: "Security is to protect the people, not to intimidate them."

"Today, the protest is under the motto 'Saving Libya from corruption and corruptors' which asks for several demands, most importantly securing rights and freedoms, combating corruption, holding elections and hold all officials accountable. The protest was not planned for a specific purpose, but because the situation here deteriorated, corruption prevailed and people became afraid. So we thought there must be a civil movement in Benghazi since its people always spoke loudly for their rights," another protester said.

Libya has been torn by conflict since the ousting of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. More recently the country has been split into areas controlled by the GNA in Tripoli and the northwest, and territories held by the eastern-based LNA in Benghazi, led by General Khalifa Haftar.
