A confectionery store founded in 1922 in Akita, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga hometown, has created liquorice and cookies to celebrate the new Prime Minister. The cookies and cakes from Kaorudo appeared to be very popular with customers, as recorded on Monday in north Japan.

"When PM Suga's Jonamagashi (high-grade fresh confections) was first created, it had a very realistic look and a very realistic face. That made it a little bit strange to eat, so we decided to recreated the product it into something that makes everyone smile, a cuter version and more Instagramable," said Hirohide Kato, the director and sales manager of Kaorudo.

Besides the Suga-models, Hirohide Kato and his team have created the special Suga Kaoru sables (shortbread) cookies. The cookies cost 216 yen (€1.75; $2.06) and the models cost 162 yen (€1.31; $1.55) each.

The models, made out of a white bean paste, have been limited to the sale of 50, as it takes between 15 to 20 minutes to make each piece.

"PM Suga's Jonamagashi (high-grade fresh confections) is made with white bean paste, which is called Neri-kiri in Japanese, so it is coloured into Neri-kiri white, of course, coloured with something that can be eaten naturally. Then we put red bean paste into the head part for the hair, which is shaped like a fluttering hair. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to make just one piece. Therefore, it is limited to 50 pieces (for sale) a day."

Suga was voted in as Prime Minister of Japan earlier last week after Shinzo Abe, Japan's longest-serving prime minister, abruptly announced his resignation last month due to his deteriorating health.
