USA: Supreme court protesters 'wake up' GOP Sen. Graham with noisy demo outside DC home

United States, Washington DC
September 21, 2020 at 19:30 GMT -00:00 · Published

Protesters gathered outside Republican senator Lindsay Graham's home in Washington DC, in the early hours of Monday, to decry his support for President Donald Trump's efforts to nominate a new justice to the Supreme Court before the election.

Dozens of people could be seen yelling, speaking on megaphones, flashing lights, and banging pots and pans in a bid to wake the Senator up.

"Graham made the argument that the Supreme Court seat should not be filled until after the next president is inaugurated. That was in February of 2016. Ruth Bader Ginsburg died last week and it's September right now. If that argument held any weight in 2016, it holds so much more now when we are just less than 60 days out from the election," a protester said.

As Republicans hold a majority in the Senate they can confirm Trump's eventual nominee, but Democrats are mounting pressure for the nominee to be chosen after the election, based on a precedent in 2016 when Justice Antonin Scalia died during the last year of the Obama administration.

In 2016 South Carolina senator Graham opposed to hold any confirmation hearings for Obama's nominee Merrick Garland under the argument that "a new Justice cannot be nominated in an electoral year, and must be a newly elected president who should do that."

As the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee Graham will be leading the nomination hearings when they take place.

After gathering outside Graham's residence protesters marched towards the Supreme Court.

Trump said on Monday that he will name his third Supreme Court nominee on "Friday or Saturday," after Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died aged 87 on Friday.
