USA: Pompeo announces new sanctions against Iran's Def Ministry and Maduro

United States, Washington DC
September 21, 2020 at 18:14 GMT -00:00 · Published

The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced a fresh round of sanctions against Iran and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, whilst talking to the press on Monday in Washington DC.

Pompeo said that the US was "sanctioning the Iranian Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics, and Iran's Defense Industries Organisation and its director," as well Maduro for allegedly working with the Iranians to "flout the UN arms embargo."

"Our actions today are a warning, they should be heard worldwide, no matter who you are, if you violate the UN arms embargo on Iran, you risk sanctions," he added.

The secretary of state also stressed that Washington expected "every member and state in the United Nations has responsibility to enforce these sanctions, that certainly includes the United Kingdom, France and Germany."

On Saturday, Pompeo announced in a statement the "return of virtually all previously terminated UN sanctions." He declared that the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran is no longer in force.

France, Germany and the UK released a joint statement on Sunday saying that the US had no authority to reimpose the sanctions and that any sanctions the US sought to impose on other states for non-enforcement would be similarly void.

Almost all members of the UN Security Council, as well as the vast majority of the international community, and the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres maintain that the US sanctions have no legal basis, as they hold that US has no right to impose them due to its 2018 departure from the Iran nuclear deal.
