Spain: Police conduct checks as new COVID restrictions imposed in Madrid

Spain, Madrid
September 21, 2020 at 14:32 GMT -00:00 · Published

Madrid Municipal police officers were seen conducting checks in Vallecas on Monday, during the first day of new restrictions limiting all but essential movements in 37 different sanitary areas of the autonomous community for the next two weeks, to curb the spread of coronavirus.

Police officers were seen stopping drivers at Puente de Vallecas, as well as checking bus passengers documents, and overseeing compliance with the new restrictions.

According to reports, the new measures mean a limit on movements but not a lockdown like the one previously imposed, although people living in the affected areas are not allowed to leave their homes unless they have to, with parks being closed, and permission to transit the area only given to those whose start and end of the journey in places not affected by the new restrictions.

Spain, which has been one the most affected countries by the coronavirus pandemic in Europe, has seen a recent surge in cases in the past weeks, with over 640,000 infections reported since the beginning of the outbreak, and over 30,000 related deaths, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
