Residents of Madrid took to the streets on Sunday to protest against the new measures introduced to slow the spread of the coronavirus in the capital.

The government led by Isabel Diaz Ayuso announced that partial lockdowns would be put in place in the 37 areas of the autonomous community with high incidences of the coronavirus on Friday.

The Ayuso government justified the decision based on the high number of cases in the affected zones, with areas where more than 1,000 cases per 100,000 inhabitants have been registered, such as Puente de Vallecas, Villaverde, or Usera.

However, according to data from the regional government, there are areas of Madrid that do not exceed 1,000 cases per 100,000 inhabitants such as Lavapies, Doctor Trueta and Las Fronteras that will not be confined, and places that do not reach 1,000 cases but will be.

"It seems to me that this is a very clear example of a government that defends aporophobia and confining poor neighbourhoods while the rest of the districts can continue to enjoy all their privileges," said Vanesa, a protester.

Ayuso blamed the contagion in the confined areas on the "way of life" of immigration in Madrid, since these are neighbourhoods with a high number of foreign residents.

The residents of these places will not be able to leave except to go to the doctor, to work, to attend educational centres, to care for dependents, or to carry out administrative procedures, among other exceptions.

Customer capacity in businesses, including bars, restaurants, is also to reduced to 50 percent and they must close at 22:00 local time (20:00 GMT). The measures will take effect at midnight from Sunday to Monday 21 and will affect 855,193 people.

According to the latest data provided by the Spanish Ministry of Health, to date 640,040 cases of COVID-19 and 30,495 deaths with the disease have been confirmed in the country.
