Belarus: Police detain activists during ‘Sparkly March’ protest in Minsk

Belarus, Minsk
September 19, 2020 at 19:08 GMT +00:00 · Published

Police detained several participants of the women’s ‘Sparkly March’ protest on Saturday in Minsk.

Hundreds of protesters, mostly women, could be seen marching in a column through the centre of the Belarusian capital and chanting "Wake up!" as well as "Lukashenko to the paddy wagon!" and other slogans.

The march started, as has become traditional, near the Komarovsky market and police began to detain people on Surhanava and Jakub Kolas streets. The exact number of detainees has not yet been reported.

Belarus has been swept by anti-government protests following the disputed presidential election that saw incumbent president Aleksander Lukashenko re-elected for a sixth term.

On August 19 the European Union announced plans to enact sanctions against "a substantial number of individuals responsible for violence, repression, and election fraud" in Belarus.
