UK: Assange's refusal to accept deal saw toughening of US administration's stance - Hrafnsson

WikiLeaks editor-in-chief Kristinn Hrafnsson explained that Julian Assange's refusal to accept a pardon in exchange for the sources of the hacking of the Democratic National Committee emails prompted the US administration to harden its stance on the Wikileaks co-founder. Hrafnsson made his statement while speaking to the press outside the court in London on Friday.

"After this denial by Julian Assange to accept this offer, we saw a toughening stance and a more rigorous determination by the Department of Justice both in terms of actions and words to indict Julian Assange, bring him over to the United States, and basically put him in prison for the rest of his life, " Hrafnsson explained.

Assange was reportedly offered a pardon by the US President Donald Trump administration in 2017 if he were to provide the sources for the hacking of the Democratic National Committee emails before the 2016 US presidential election.

"It was never a possibility for Julian Assange to accept an offer of this nature. No journalists will ever reveal his sources in exchange for such a favour being offered, or even reveal his sources period," Hrafnsson added.

Back in February, Republican congressman Rohrabacher, who allegedly met with Assange to offer Trump's pardon, denied claims he was acting on behalf of Trump saying he had instead told Assange if he disclosed the source of DNC email leaks, he would ask the president to pardon him. The White House also dismissed the claims, calling them lies and fabrications.

Also present outside the court, Julian Assange's father John Shipton reaffirmed his son and WikiLeak's purpose after a long week of audience.

"The intensity of the week as demonstrated the thoroughness of redactions and the care for people and treasuring and cherishing life," he said.
