Israel: Hundreds rally in Tel Aviv against announcement of new COVID-19 lockdown

Hundreds of protesters rallied in central Tel Aviv on Thursday, protesting against an announced reintroduction of a lockdown due to the coronavirus.

The protesters held numerous placards and banners denouncing the lockdown, and saying the coronavirus measures have been exaggerated.

Dikla, a protester, said, "The shutdown is in order to turn us into submissive, suppressed sheep. This is basically what it's about - it's in order to scare us and to try to break us down. But we're not going to be broken down so easily."

Tania, another protester, stated, "[We're protesting] because we're about to go in another lockdown, and it's completely unacceptable. Back in March, lots of us didn't know what was going on and so we listened to the government. And now it's just become so apparent that there's no logic behind the lockdown, apart from getting people so depressed, caught up in their homes, doing unhealthy things, which is what the government has been telling us to do since the beginning of this health crisis, the biggest healthy crisis in living memory."

"And we've had enough, we've really had enough. And we've had a big awakening, waking up to what is really going on here which I think it's all about pushing, getting the people so desperate, having their businesses collapse, having people's kids away from school that people are just going to be begging for some kind of vaccine, but we're aware of that right now, and we're not going to be taking any vaccine," she added.

Israel has reported over 175,000 cases of coronavirus since the start of the outbreak, according to Johns Hopkins University. Over 1,160 people have died with the virus.
