Peru: Students, teachers march against privatising education

Peru, Lima
September 18, 2020 at 02:20 GMT -00:00 · Published

Dozens of students and teachers gathered at education ministry headquarters in Lima, on Thursday, to protest against exams being done online due to the coronavirus pandemic, and against Decree 326, which critics say seeks to privatise public education.

Demonstrators were seen holding placards and banners while respecting the social distance. A riot police truck is also seen near the protest.

"Today we, the teachers, came out to protest, and in solidarity with the struggle of the university students and postulants, who are demanding equal rights to be able to apply to a public university," said Marcos Quispe, the teachers' representative.

Angel Terrones, president of the San Marcos University Student Federation, demanded that the government take measures to prevent truancy: "[Students] are going out to work informally and are not able to continue with their classes, so this too, the state should consider being able to justly guarantee education."

According to local media reports, Resolution 326 decreed by the education ministry would allow non-profit entities to administer state educational institutions, which is seen by its critics as a hidden attempt at privatisation.
