Germany: Seehofer praises Greece for stopping migrants' influx instigated by Turkey

German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer praised Greece for stopping migrants from reaching Germany and Austria when Turkey opened the borders this year, whilst answering questions from the German Parliament, in Berlin, on Wednesday.

He promised that the efforts would not be forgotten during a discussion.

"That was an effective contribution of the Greek government to the European interests and we won't forget it during the whole discussion," he said.

The CDU (Christian Democratic Union) politician said a humanitarian solution was indeed possible following the fires at the Moria camp, and said there was a "high probability" that the limit of asylum seekers would not exceed 100,000. He said greater migration would be limited through these actions.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Interior Minister Horst Seehofer announced the plans to accept the migrants on Tuesday, September 15, but had to wait for final agreement within the governing coalition amid disagreements over how many people to welcome.

Thousands of migrants have been forced to evacuate following the fires that broke out at the Moria refugee camp on Wednesday, September 9, burning large parts of it to the ground.

The Moria migrant camp was the largest in Europe, exceeding almost four times its maximum capacity of 3,100 people, hosting around 13,000 migrants living in poor sanitary conditions.
