Germany: Hamburg's red-light district reopens with COVID-19 restrictions

The Herbert Street, located near the main red-light district in Hamburg's Reeperbahn started opened its doors again on Tuesday, after new coronavirus regulations were established to enable prostitution.

This reopening was permitted by the city following a series of protests and talks between the City of Hamburg and sex workers. The sex workers themselves developed a hygiene concept, allowing them to gather the support from virologists and the health authorities, to enable prostitution to be permitted again.

"The hygiene concept comes directly and completely from us. We have created it, as good as we found it, what we want to implement this in any case," a sex worker, named Laura, said.

The new restrictions will include washing of laundry in between clients, wearing of masks for both sex workers and clients and taking the contact details of clients.

"Then when the guest comes in, he has to register with a QR code or fill in a contact data list and then in the room, he has to wear a permanent mask and some sexual contacts cannot be made," she continued.

According to the Head of Hamburg Mitte district, Falko Drossmann, the new regulations will be checked closely by authorities.

"So, from 15.09, which is today, it's possible again and yes, we will control it, we will control it closely, but I will not say how we will control it, but the ladies know that too," Drossmann said.

Sex workers wearing masks could be seen posing with artwork, which was produced by artist Maaike Dirkx. The piece of art will be used to support sex workers with 5 percent of its sale to be donated to them.

The Herbert Street reopening was celebrated with the closure of the gates, meaning there's business running, and the unveiling of a painting to mark the six months of closure due to the coronavirus pandemic.
