New findings suggest existence of 'living organisms in clouds of Venus'

Scientists announced on Monday the discovery of traces of phosphine gas in the clouds above Venus, suggesting the presence of some type of lifeform in the planet's atmosphere.

Lead by Professor Jane Greaves from Cardiff University, the group of scientists announced their groundbreaking discovery whilst speaking at an online video conference hosted by the UK's Royal Astronomical Society, at which they explained the traces could very well be signs of micro-organisms living in the clouds of Venus.

"We've detected a rare gas called phosphine in the atmosphere of our neighbour planet Venus. And the reason for our excitement is that phosphine gas on Earth is made by a micro-organism that lives in an oxygen-free environment. So there is a chance that we have detected some kind of living organisms in the clouds of Venus," explained Professor Greaves.

She added that the findings may point to a sign of habitable conditions "50 to 60" kilometres above the surface of the planet.

During the presser MIT planetary scientist Sara Seager, also said the findings not only offer exciting news about Venus but would also allow scientists to look for more signs of life in other neighbouring planets. "A generation of astronomers is now working to enable future telescopes, observations and theory, to be able to find signs of life on exoplanets far away by looking for gases on the atmosphere that don't belong," she stated.
