Russia: Lavrov reiterates Moscow’s request for data on Navalny case

Moscow is interested in securing information concerning the case of Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny through the OPCW, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said during a press conference in Moscow on Friday. He made the comments after holding bilateral talks with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi.

"We are required to investigate the case, but it turns out that all those who accompanied [Alexei] Navalny are also slowly moving to Germany. It is all very unpleasant and this leads us to some serious thoughts. That is why it is in the interests of our German colleagues to protect their reputation and provide all the necessary information that could somehow shed light on their unfounded accusations,” he stated.

Navalny fell ill during a flight from Tomsk to Moscow on August 20. He was immediately hospitalised in the Siberian city of Omsk following an emergency landing. On August 22, he was airlifted to Berlin's Charite clinic.

On September 2, Berlin said Navalny had been the victim of an attack with a chemical nerve agent from the Novichok group.

Navalny has just started showing signs of recovery and woke up from his medically induced coma in Berlin's Charite hospital on Monday. According to a statement issued by the hospital, Navalny will be gradually weaned off ventilation and is reacting to speech.

"We have read this letter [from the German government to the OPCW regarding the Navalny case], and it says only that, according to German experts, it was poisoning and the so-called ‘Novichok’ was used. There were no other communications between Berlin and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. And of course, we are interested in getting the data, which the German side is carefully protecting, at least through the OPCW."

Lavrov also went on to comment on accusations emanating from the US against Russia of alleged interference in the сountry’s internal affairs through cyberattacks.

"We repeatedly offered our American colleagues to sort out a variety of options concerning these absolutely unfounded accusations; we offered to resume the mechanism of consultations on cybersecurity,” Lavrov said.

For his part, Wang Yi noted that Beijing is ready for reciprocal steps in the China-India border conflict.

"The most important thing is to prevent a repeated violation of the obligations at the border,” he said.
