Russia: Omsk hospital doctors say ‘threats didn’t affect’ Navalny’s treatment

The doctors who treated Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny at the Omsk City Clinical Emergency Hospital No. 1 said threats they received did not affect his treatment, speaking in a press conference in the Siberian city Monday.

“I’ve got dozens of physical threats and some of them were related to my career, family and kids. Anyway, it didn’t affect anything. We don’t judge these people, we treated a person, he wasn’t guilty of it,” commented Anatoly Kalinichenko, the deputy director at the emergency clinic.

Chief doctor Alexander Murakhovski on his part said he wasn’t personally threatened but added that large crowds outside the hospital caused problems for them.

“There were a lot of people around the hospital. Sometimes even ambulances couldn’t get through with the patients. Filming the ambulances with patients is not allowed under any circumstances, but it happened. Of course, we didn’t like it. But I have to repeat again that we are doctors and our mission is to treat and save lives,” he said.

Navalny fell ill and lost consciousness on a flight from Tomsk to Moscow on Thursday. He was hospitalised in Omsk after an emergency landing in the city. On Saturday, the anti-corruption campaigner was airlifted to Berlin, where he is being treated at the Charite hospital.

The Russian doctors said the preliminary diagnosis for the activist’s condition was “metabolism imbalance,” caused by a “sudden drop in blood sugar level.” Navalny’s family and collaborators suspect he was poisoned, but the doctors in Omsk said they hadn’t found any traces of poison in his body.
