Israel: Clashes and arrests as thousands march in anti-Netanyahu protest
Thousands of protesters took the streets of Jerusalem again on Saturday to call for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to resign.
Several marches took place in different places in Israel’s capital, including next to Netanyahu’s both official and private residence, despite not receiving a permit from the police.
Seven protesters were arrested so far, according to local reports. Police officers could be seen being scuffling with campaigners and riding horses through the crowd.
Jerusalem Police said in a statement that they will allow “the freedom of protest”, but not “public disruption and violation of the law.”
On Wednesday, Israel’s High Court rejected a petition aiming to limit the protests, although agreed that police should enforce the municipal law banning noise after 9:30 PM local time (18:30 GMT).
Protests against Netanyahu began earlier this year and have grown over the past two months. Demonstrators point to the corruption allegations against Netanyahu and what they perceive as his government's poor handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
