Chile: Several detained at Mapuche rally in Santiago
Scores of Mapuche protesters were detained during a rally in support of imprisoned members of the indigenous community in Santiago on Friday.
Police and military deployed in large numbers to the site of the protest were filmed using water cannons to disperse demonstrators.
The Mapuche indigenous community has been holding protests demanding the release of spiritual guide (Machi) Celestino Cordova and others, whom the group considers to be political prisoners.
According to reports, Cordova has been on a hunger strike for more than 100 days and is in critical condition.
In 2014, he was sentenced to 18 years in prison for arson which killed an elderly couple, but what his supporters describe as political persecution.
