Spain: Mallorca beaches quiet as COVID-19 cases increase despite restrictions

Palma's once bustling pedestrian streets looked half-empty on Friday after an increase in COVID-19 cases in the Balearic Islands, one of Spain's most lucrative tourist destinations.

The beach could be seen occupied by relatively few beachgoers, with fewer holidaymakers on the streets and at Palma airport. Normally, the locations are bustling with people at the height of the summer season.

"I just don't think it's justified because all the tourists who are here now are not included in the statistics, in the total number, the residents. And then the number was also significantly low than the limit," said German tourist Sabine Nihov.

"You try to protect yourself as much as possible, but when you have to, so if my boss says he wants to have a test when I come back, then I have to do it," another holidaymaker, Dennis Post, said.

Mallorca, a popular tourist destination for the Brits and Germans, has been affected by restrictions ordered by the governments of both countries requiring COVID-19 testing, and eventually a quarantine for citizens returning from the island.

Last week, Germany extended a travel warning against large parts of Spain, including Mallorca. As a result, tourists will need to test negative for coronavirus or stay in quarantine for 14 days.

Germany extended this restriction to those returning from all of Spain, except the Canary Islands.
