Greece: 'We have no fear' - Greeks react to country's standoff with Turkey in the Mediterranean

Tensions between Turkey and Greece over the exploration of energy reserves in the eastern Mediterranean escalated on Thursday after France sent jets to the area and the Greek government placed its military forces on high alert.

Greeks in Athens reacted to the developments, largely supporting Greece's official stance on the dispute.

"We have no fear. Turkey is just threatening. Greece feels confident and we have all sorts of strong weapons, so we will defend ourselves," said Nafsika Dounavi Aggeli, a teacher.

"I think both sides are playing games. Both countries have problems on the inside, so they're trying to present external threats in order for people to stay obedient," said Michalis, a pensioner.

"I'm not afraid at all. I'm really confident in our people. I think we have got clear hands and in the end, we will get what we truly deserve," said Aphrodite, a local.

Greece recently signed a maritime delimitation agreement with Egypt, significantly overlapping with Turkey's continental shelf claims that were previously ratified with Libya.

The Oruc Reis seismic research vessel, which last month conducted seismographic surveys near Kastellorizo, is reportedly carrying out additional surveys in the waters of Greece's continental shelf claims and the Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus.

Turkey has long fought for the international recognition of what it considers its maritime boundaries in the Eastern Mediterranean and has repeatedly contested oil and gas exploration efforts and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) delineations by Cyprus. Ankara argued that the agreements violate both Turkey's and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus's (TRNC) sovereign rights.

Athens considers Turkish research a violation of the international law.
