Turkey: Turkish naval vessel sighted in Kas amid maritime tensions with Greece

Turkey, Kas
August 12, 2020 at 19:19 GMT -00:00 · Published

A ship belonging to the Turkish Navy remained anchored in the port of Kas on Wednesday. The sighting comes as Turkey's Oruc Reis seismic research vessel continued its journey nearby within the country's continental shelf claim escorted by a military outfit.

Apparently in response to Turkey's actions, Greek ships have appeared off the coast of Kastellorizo directly opposite Kas.

Greece recently signed a maritime delimitation agreement with Egypt, significantly overlapping with Turkey's continental shelf claims that were previously ratified with Libya.

The Oruc Reis, which last month conducted seismographic surveys near Kastellorizo, will reportedly carry out additional surveys in waters inside of Greece's continental shelf claims and the Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus.

Turkey has long fought for international recognition of what it considers its maritime boundaries in the Eastern Mediterranean, and has repeatedly contested oil and gas exploration efforts and EEZ delineations by the Republic of Cyprus, arguing that the agreements violate both Turkey's and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus's (TRNC) sovereign rights.

Athens considers the Turkish research to be contrary to international law reportedly stating that the areas of sea in question belong to the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Greece according to the rules of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
