Czech Republic: US wants people of Belarus to have 'freedoms they’re demanding,' Pompeo says

Czech Republic, Prague

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis denounced the response of the Belarusian state to protests in the country following Alexander Lukashenko's presidential election victory on Sunday. They made the comments at a joint press conference in Prague on Wednesday as Pompeo was finishing his official two-day visit to the Czech Republic.

"We want the people of Belarus to have the freedoms that they’re demanding, that they think are in their best interests. We watched the protest, we urge that the nonviolent protesters be protected and not harmed. It’s not in anyone’s best interest to do that. And we will continue to speak about the risks to the Belarusian people," Pompeo said.

Andrej Babis called the Belarusian government “unacceptable” and urged Europe to “take some concrete action” in response to the situation.

Mike Pompeo also took aim at China and thanked the Czechs for reducing “dependence on Russian [military] gear.”

"Like many other free nations on this continent and around the world, it’s [Czech Republic] begun to see the challenges posed by the Chinese Communist Party to our hard-won liberties, and you’ve taken the sovereign decision to support and protect your people," the secretary of state said in reference to decisions taken on 5G security by the Czech government.

Pompeo's appearance was part of a five-day visit to several European countries, including Poland, Austria, and Slovenia, during which he is expected to focus on the US push to block Chinese tech giant Huawei from winning 5G infrastructure contracts, among other issues.
