Belarus: Lukashenko blames ‘criminals’ and ‘unemployed’ for protests

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko chaired a meeting with his Security Council in Minsk on Wednesday, amid mass protests in the country following Sunday’s presidential election.

The president said the government’s most important job was to keep the economy running, and blamed criminals and unemployment for protests.

“The base of these so-called protesters are people with a criminal background and unemployed people. No job – go to the streets and avenues. So, I am asking you all nicely, I am warning those unemployed to go get a job,” Lukashenko said.

According to the Interior Ministry, about 6,000 people have been detained throughout the country since Sunday's election.

The ministry has also said that one protester died on Monday during the demonstrations in Minsk.

According to the country's Central Election Commission, Lukashenko, who has been in power in Belarus since 1994, won the August 9 election with more than 80 percent of the ballots.

His closest opponent Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, the wife of Belarusian opposition figure and blogger Sergei Tikhanovsky, received 10.09 percent of the vote. She has since fled the country for Lithuania.
