India: Villagers share details of rescue operation after Kerala plane crash

India, Kozhikode
August 10, 2020 at 03:04 GMT -00:00 · Published

Indian villagers who helped evacuate passengers of the crashed Air India Express flight in Kozhikode shared their account of the rescue operation on Sunday.

"When we first arrived here, we saw one fire-fighters' vehicle and one ambulance. They were waiting here and did nothing. They didn't know what to do. We were trying to help, but we weren't allowed initially. That time one of the injured passengers had a heated argument with the security officer to let the villagers help the passengers. We told them we will help the injured. Then the security personal allowed us to help the passengers. That time around 20 of our villagers were here and we started the rescue," said Mohammed Sinan who was one of the first to reach the crash site.

Investigators began examining the black box of the Boeing-737 which skidded of the runway killing 18 people in India's worst aviation accident in a decade.

"We are feeling so bad about this. This accident is too much pain. But i am sure, we must have long runway so that we can save the lives of the people. People all will agree to that point. This is most important, their life is most important. So the extension is a must," said Khalid, another villager.

The government ordered villagers taking part in the operation to be placed under quarantine after one of the rescued passengers tested positive for coronavirus.
