In an interview for RT, nurse Pamela Zeinoun from Saint George Hospital in the Ashrafieh district of Beirut, recounted on Friday how she saved three babies from the neonatal intensive care unit (ICU) after the explosions that rocked the capital.

Zeinoun said that after the blasts went off, she found herself covered in rubble. After checking if she had any injuries, her first instinct was to enter the nursery, to check on the newborns.

"The neonatal IC units were covered in rubble as well, I started pulling the babies from inside the units, I was frightened because I thought the babies might be crushed under the rubble, but thank God they were okay. Then I took the babies through this corridor down the stairs four floors," said the nurse.

When Zeinoun went out of the hospital, she saw medical personnel treating patients on the pavement, with whatever equipment and medical supplies were available. Her hospital having lost electricity, she wanted to bring the newborns to another establishment.

"They all weigh less than two kilograms, they had nothing on them except diapers, people on the street started throwing their T-Shirts and clothes at me so I can wrap them and keep them warm. They can't make it if they aren't warm," she explained.

Zeinoun decided to go to Abou-Jaoude Hospital in the Jal Dib district, more than five kilometres away. When she reached the place, she asked medical personnel to provide at least one ICU to save the kids.

"I told them I'll put them all together in the same neonatal ICU and that's what I did. All the feelings of trauma and fear went away when we ran tests on the babies and found that their hearts are beating normally, oxygen levels, their temperature, colour, everything was normal," said the nurse.

Jihad Khoury, a doctor at Saint George Hospital, said that on the day of the explosion, the hospital lost 17 people, including doctors, nurses, patients and visitors.

"Seventy other doctors were also injured, including three doctors who are in critical condition. We have established a crisis cell to follow up with their cases as well as with all the material damage the hospital has sustained," he explained.

The explosions, which killed at least 157 people and injured more than 5,000, according to officials, are thought to have been caused by the ignition of 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate.

The highly explosive chemical material was reportedly stored without precautionary measures at the port.
