Lebanon: Beirutis react to Nasrallah's statement on port blasts

Beirutis reacted on Friday to Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah’s speech in which he called for a "full, transparent, accurate" investigation into the Beirut port blasts that rocked the capital on Tuesday.

"We cannot entrust the investigation to anyone from outside who might deceive us or politicise the issue, because that would take us somewhere else and that would lead to other crises. As Hassan Nasrallah said, the judiciary should be the authority that decided based on the witnesses available on the ground," said a local resident.

“We have had previous experiences with international courts and investigations committees, and we don't trust it because we know that it works based on political frameworks and it changes the facts towards the ends it seeks," commented another Beiruti.

Nasrallah, during his televised speech, also denied Hezbollah’s connection to the explosions in the capital.

The blasts, which took the lives of at least 157 people and injured more than 5,000, according to officials, are thought to have been caused by the still unexplained ignition of 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, a highly explosive chemical material which was reportedly stored without precautionary measures at the port, according to Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab.

The Lebanese government has declared a two-week state of emergency.
