Germany: Arrests as protesters confront police during Syndikat bar eviction

Germany, Berlin
August 7, 2020 at 08:05 GMT -00:00 · Published

Several protesters were arrested in Berlin's Neukolln district on Friday morning, during a demonstration decrying the eviction of local left-wing pub Syndikat.

Protesters could be seen chanting on the streets and facing off with police who used tear gas and pepper spray.

Protesters have been gathering under the motto "Long Night of the Weisestrasse" outside the pub for several weeks since the long-contested pub received a clearing order from police for August 7 at 9 am (07:00 GMT).

Police set up barricades in the area and protesters gathered in a move of solidarity for the pub, which emerged as a centre of the district's left-wing scene over the last 35 years.

According to reports, in 2018 Syndikat failed to reach an agreement on the renewal of their lease with the owners of the building, who are reported to be a billionaire family from the UK owning thousands of properties in the German capital.

The original eviction date was set for April but was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
