Germany: Several detained as protesters rally against eviction of left-wing pub in Berlin

Protesters clashed with police on the streets of Berlin’s Neukolln district on Thursday night and into Friday morning, as protesters held a demonstration decrying the eviction of local left-wing pub “Syndikat.”

Protesters could be seen chanting on the streets before clashes erupted as night fell on the city. Police could be seen detaining sevaral protesters.

The rally, held under the motto "Long Night of the Weisestrasse,” was called for after the long-contested pub received a clearing order from police for August 7th at 09:00am. Police set up barricades in the area and protesters gathered overnight in a move of solidarity for the pub, which over the last 35 years emerged as a centre of the district’s left-wing scene.

According to reports, in 2018 Syndikat failed to reach an agreement on the renewal of their lease with the owners of the building, who reported to be a billionaire family from the UK who own thousands of properties in the German capital. The original eviction date was set for April but was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
