Belarus: Hundreds rally in support of opposition candidate Tikhanovskaya in Minsk

Belarus, Minsk
August 7, 2020 at 00:15 GMT -00:00 · Published

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered at Minsk’s Kiev Garden Square to support opposition presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya on Thursday.

A feast for children was scheduled to take place there, just in front of the Children and Youth Hall, but Tikhanovskaya invited her supporters to gather there as well. She planned a rally in Druzhby Narodov [Peoples Friendship] park, but local authorities did not give permission due to the other event planned there.

Children and Youth Hall employees could be seen seen starting famous Soviet song “Peremen” [We wait for changes] by Viktor Tsoy, but local authorities rushed to turn it off and call the police while the crowd was chanting “Good job!”

“We all want something to change,” said Kirill Galanov, who turned the music on.

Tikhanovskaya did not appear at the event herself, but Maria Kolesnikova, who represents jailed opposition presidential hopeful Viktor Babariko, spoke with Ruptly.

“We do not want this kids feast to be considered a political event. We do not want any escalation so we decided to leave this event in order not to heat up tensions.”

The presidential election in Belarus is set to take place on August 9. The incumbent leader Alexander Lukashenko is seeking a sixth term in office. Two other candidates Viktor Babaryko and Valery Tsepkalo were denied registration because of the “inconsistencies in income statements’”. Earlier in June, opposition candidate Viktor Babaryko was arrested on tax evasion and money laundering allegations.
