Poland, Katowice and Sosnowiec

Doctors confirmed on Thursday that Dutch cyclist Fabio Jakobsen was placed into a pharmacological coma and required surgery. The rider suffered a horrific crash on stage one of the Tour of Poland at the finish line in Katowice on Wednesday.

Footage from Wednesday shows the scene of the crash in Katowice while doctors spoke about Jakobsen's condition outside a hospital in nearby Sosnowiec on Thursday.

Jakobsen remains stable in hospital after the crash with compatriot Dylan Groenewegen and doctors will try to wake him from a coma later on Thursday.

"At the moment, the cyclist is in a stable condition in the Clinical Intensive Care Unit. He has his own [unsupported, heart] pressure and he is of course using a ventilator due to the anaesthesia he had in the operating room," confirmed Deputy for medical treatment at St. Barbara Hospital Pawel Gruenpeter on Thursday.

Groenewegen drifted across the road before he collided with Jakobsen just before the finish line. This led Jakobsen to crash into some barriers before hitting an official stood close to the finish line. The official suffered both head and spinal injuries but was able to speak when he was transported to hospital.

Groenewegen was named as the race winner before later being disqualified, several other riders also fell after in the ensuing chaos at the finish line.
