Lebanon: Families of missing people gather at Beirut port to demand answers

Families with missing relatives gathered at Beirut's port on Thursday, to demand information about the whereabouts of their family members in the aftermath of the recent explosions.

"We want to take our family members and leave whether they are alive or not. Whatever happened to them. For three days we have been here on the spot,” said one relative of a missing person.

On Tuesday afternoon powerful explosions rocked the port of Beirut, resulting in the deaths of least 135 people, while thousands more were injured, and many more were left homeless.

"We call on the state to bring us our son alive or dead, and we have not known anything about him for three days. If he still had a soul yesterday, then perhaps his soul has left him today because they did not save him, if this was a state, it would have saved them. It's been three days, they are making fun of us,” said another local.

The blasts are thought to have been caused by the still unexplained ignition of 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, a highly explosive chemical material which was reportedly stored without precautionary measures at the port, according to Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab.

Results of an investigation into the causes of the explosions are expected to be released in the next five days.
