Netherlands: Face masks mandatory in Red Light District as Amsterdam enforces rule in busy places

Amsterdam has become one of the latest European cities to introduce mandatory face masks in its busy public areas starting from Wednesday as the country is facing a spike in coronavirus cases.

The new measures came into effect in the capital city as well as the port city of Rotterdam as the number of infections doubled in a week across the Netherlands, with 56,381 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 6,153 deaths related to the virus.

Footage filmed on Wednesday shows crowds of locals and tourists in one of the busiest Amsterdam areas, the Red Light District.

Not everyone was wearing masks and keeping the required distance as opinions differed on whether mandated masks were necessary and could really help in halting the virus transmission.

"You are breathing out the carbon dioxide and waste, you are breathing it into a mask you wear eight hours a day. Eventually, that mask can make you sick," said a tourist.

Another tourist from France, however, had a different opinion: "It's important to wear a mask especially for older people because we need to be all together to protect people from infection."

Starting from Wednesday, August 5, it is mandatory for anyone aged above 13 to wear a face mask in the following parts of the city: Nieuwendijk and Kalverstraat, the Red Light District, Plein '40-'45 market and Albert Cuypstraat market.
