Japan: Hiroshima marks 75th anniversary of atomic bomb

Japan, Hiroshima
August 6, 2020 at 05:55 GMT -00:00 · Published

Tens of thousands of people gathered in Hiroshima's Memorial Peace Park on Wednesday, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the US dropping the atomic bomb on the city.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe laid a wreath at the memorial site and later addressed those in attendance, saying "While adhering to the Three Non-Nuclear Principles, our nation will serve as a bridge between countries that take a different stance as we persist in urging dialogue to prompt them into action. By doing so, we will lead efforts made by the global community to realize a world without nuclear weapons."

The atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 in what became the closing days of World War II, and marked the first time a nuclear device had ever been used in war.

Over 20,000 Japanese soldiers and around 140,000 civilians were killed in the Hiroshima bombing, which was conducted in concurrence with a second atomic bombing of Nagasaki, where the death toll is estimated to be around 74,000. Many died immediately while others succumbed to injuries or passed-away due to radiation-related illnesses weeks, months and years later.
