Russia: EMERCOM plane set to deliver field hospital and rescue teams to Beirut

Russian Federation, Zhukovsky

The first plane of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) with medical workers and equipment for a field hospital left for Beirut from Zhukovsky Airport on Wednesday.

Four more planes will also take off to the Lebanese capital within 24 hours.

According to the ministry 56 personnel and three pieces of equipment will be deployed to Beirut in order to cope with the consequences caused by a massive blast which rocked the city on Tuesday.

EMERCOM also outlined that the second plane will carry environmental watchdog Rospotrebnadzor specialists, who will be provided with special protective suits and equipment necessary amidst the current COVID-19 pandemic. They will also bring equipment to deploy the laboratory to detect new coronavirus infection.

"In total we will perform five flights to Lebanon and deploy about 150 personnel there in order to assist in eliminating of the consequences of the emergency situation" said Timur Khikmatov, deputy director of EMERCOM Information Policy Department.

A huge blast rocked the port of Beirut on Tuesday evening. According to the latest data the blast killed more than 135 people and left about 5,000 wounded, while many more remain missing.

The blasts are thought to have been caused by the still unexplained ignition of 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, a highly explosive chemical material which was reportedly stored without precautionary measures at the port, according to Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab.
