Germany: Berlin to send emergency mgmt team to Beirut after deadly blasts

The German government will send a team from the country's civil protection agency to Beirut in the wake of Tuesday's deadly explosions, according to a Foreign Ministry spokesperson on Wednesday.

Speaking from Berlin, spokesperson Christofer Burger said that "a team from the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) will be making their way to Beirut, if possible today."

Burger commented that the team would be assisting the German Embassy, which was also affected in the blasts, with crisis management.

"The destroyed logistics facilities in the port of Beirut, will certainly also pose large problems for the delivery of aid, to that end we're in talks with the aid organisations that already have a presence on the ground there," explained Burger.

He also went on to discuss a new requirement agreed with Ankara that all travellers leaving Turkey for Germany will have to show a negative coronavirus test result, calling it a "plus" in terms of safety.

Sebastian Guelde from Germany's Health Ministry commented on the potential return of in-person audiences to the German Bundesliga, forecasted for mid-September.

Guelde said that the German Football League (DFL) had put forward its proposals which include the maintenance of minimum distances in stadiums, getting rid of standing areas, and banning the consumption of alcohol but said that aspects of the plans were still under discussion.
