Belarus: ‘This is all lies about Istanbul’ - Lukashenko comments on alleged Wagner Group members

President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko commented on the group of alleged Russian private security personnel detained near Minsk, speaking during his annual address to the nation in the country’s capital on Tuesday.

"This is a very dangerous and strong signal. This is all lies about Istanbul, Venezuela, Africa and Libya. These people who testified were intentionally sent to Belarus. The order was to wait. The tickets purchased for Istanbul flight are a myth,” he said.

Earlier, the Russian Counsellor in Belarus Dmitri Mezentsev said that the detainees were the employees of a private security company and were traveling en route to Istanbul when fulfilling the obligations under a commercial contract. Mezentsev added that the detainees intended to fly to Istanbul on July 25 but missed the flight from Minsk airport and then checked in at the ‘Belorusochka’ sanatorium instead.

The Belarusian leader also addressed his opponents in the upcoming presidential election, urging them not to get 'in the way’ if they have 'betrayal' in their minds.

"The call of alternative candidates to make changes by returning to the tumultuous nineties and to the Constitution of 1994 is a gift to criminals. This is a gift to criminal business. So there will be no going back to the tumultuous nineties," he added.

On Wednesday the Belarusian state news agency BelTA reported that 33 Russian citizens who allegedly belonged to the so-called Wagner Group private military company were detained in the country by Belarusian law enforcement agencies. BelTA then said 32 of them had arrived in Minsk on July 24 and then moved to a sanatorium near the capital. They were accused of aiming "to destabilise the situation in the run-up to the election campaign." The 33rd man was arrested in southern Belarus.

On Thursday Kremlin press secretary Dmitri Peskov stated that the alleged involvement of the group in the presidential election campaign in Belarus was "speculation."

"We have been aware of 33 Russian citizens detained in Belarus yesterday, and of 200 people who are still wanted. There is no information about any illegal actions of the Russians that could be the reason for the detention," he said.
