UK: Govt. launches half-price meal scheme 'Eat Out to Help Out' to boost restaurants

United Kingdom, London
August 3, 2020 at 22:14 GMT -00:00 · Published

In a bid to boost restaurants and pubs amid the pandemic, the UK government has launched the 'Eat Out to Help Out' scheme on Monday, which offers customers a 50 percent discount on their meals throughout August.

The scheme, designed to encourage people to go to visit businesses that were affected by the lockdown, runs from Monday to Wednesday in more than 72,000 venues. The participating restaurants include Pizza Express, McDonald's and Nando's.

It applies to eat-in food and drinks - except alcoholic ones - and the discount is capped at £10 per person (€11; $13).

''I think it is a great idea, since the pandemic, that the government wants people to start coming out, and they really want to boost the economy," said a McDonald's customer in London, on Monday.

"Rather than staying at home or feeling lonely, we all should go out and dine out. If that is the whole idea, then we should take advantage of it,'' he added.

"Business owners need to be able to keep going, so if it encourages people to go and use them, then it can only be a good thing,'' commented another local.
