Bulgaria: Tourists descend on Black Sea resort town with relaxed COVID-19 restrictions

Bulgaria, Golden Sands

As holiday-goers have been reprimanded during summer getaways in places like Mallorca, tourists have found an alternative in the Bulgarian resort town of Golden Sands.

People were seen Saturday night partying in beachside clubs in close contact without wearing protective gear.

While the town appears to enjoy greater freedom in comparison with other destinations - after full-scale shutdowns of popular party districts in Spain - residents feel there has still been a steep dropoff in visitors.

"In my opinion, there is a 40-50 per cent loss of tourists compared to last year. The number of people is significant, but there are the kind of people that don't spend money as usual," said Ivan Stoyanov, adding that COVID-19 seems to be a "global conspiracy."

"In Romania, I know the fact that the number [of infections] is growing every day is only for money," said Peter, a tourist from Romania.

Bulgaria has not introduced far-reaching restrictions such as mandatory masks in public, although newly-appointed Tourism Minister Mariana Nikolova has expressed concerns about the pandemic's impact on the country's tourism industry, suggesting a program to give vouchers for local tourists.
