Germany: Former Russian biathlon trainer speaks on allegations in Rodchenkov's doping scandal book

Former Russian female biathlon team trainer Wolfgang Pichler commented on new allegations in Russian doping whistleblower Grigory Rodchenkov's newly-published book, from his home in the Bavarian city of Rudholding on Friday.

The trainer, who recently resigned from his post as Swedish biathlon team head coach last year, was particularly grieved about Olympic gold medalist Olga Zaitseva's lifelong ban by the International Olympic Committee in 2017. Pichler had previously trained Zaitseva, as well as other sanctioned athletes, and says that many of Rodchenkov's claims should be doubted.

"The contradictions are that [Rodchenkov] said Zaitseva was EPO [erythropoietin, a performance enhancing drug] doped all the time and Zaitseva was doping all the time, and when he claimed she was [using] EPO, that Zaitseva was always in Western Europe. She was always under the control of WADA [World Anti-Doping Agency], she had many negative drug tests, she also did not live in Russia, but lived in Belgium and lived in Switzerland at the time," he said.

Having trained her at the time she was said to be doping, he says that her tests were negative and that Rodchenkov's contradictions are proof of his questionable veracity.

"All the data we had in the training camp in Forumea, I gave the whole blood values to the EPO and there was nothing noticeable at all. And I just think that he's just that it's contradicting him," he claimed.

He also said that much of the conflict appears to be a higher-level dispute between the United States and Russia, and that the athletes are merely victims of this circumstance.

"Of course doping is always an issue and it looks like it is a political fight between America and Russia and the poor are actually all the athletes who suffer from this whole fight. And the IOC [International Olympic Committee] is in the middle of it, and it's hard for you, it's hard for you to stay out of it for the IOC," he stated.

Rodchenkov is currently in hiding in the United States, where he has collaborated with WADA investigations into the scandal, and was also a prominent figure in the 2017 Netflix documentary Icarus.
