Russia: Defence requests change of Khachaturyan sisters’ pre-trial restrictions

During a preliminary court hearing in the case of the Khachaturyan sisters the defence asked for a change in pre-trial restrictions for Angelina and Krestina, at the Moscow City Court on Friday.

The sisters stand accused of the premeditated murder of their father Mikhail Khachaturyan.

According to Aleksei Parshin, lawyer of one sister, Angelina, if the court decides to reduce the restrictions then the accused will be able to work, but will be "prohibited from talking to each other, using the Internet and talking to the media.” They will also be banned from travelling beyond their city of residence.

The decision will be announced on Monday at 11 a.m. local time.

The lawyer representing several of the father's family members, Yulia Nitchenko, stated that further court hearings will not consider ‘necessary defence’ as a reason for the killing. The sisters' lawyers did not respond to this assertion following the hearing and it is unclear what their line of defence will be.

"When the court asked: ‘Do you agree with that? Are you really sure that the case will be considered only concerning actions except for necessary defence?’ Both sisters stood up and said they agreed that the issue of necessary defence will not be considered," said Nitchenko after the hearing.

Three sisters, Maria, Angelina and Krestina Khachaturyan, are accused of stabbing their 57-year-old father Mikhail Khachaturyan to death in a Moscow apartment on July 27, 2018. They confessed to the killing after they were arrested. Earlier, the young women claimed their father has beaten and sexually abused them for years. Several relatives of the family refute this and allege that the sisters had a financial motive for killing their father.
