East Jerusalem: Thousands flock to Al-Aqsa mosque for Eid al-Adha

Thousands of people attended Eid Al-Adha prayers at the Al-Aqsa mosque in East Jerusalem on Friday, amid tight security by Israeli authorities.

Worshippers made their way to the mosque compound in the early morning to celebrate Eid Al Adha, the festival of sacrifice, as Israeli authorities imposed a partial lockdown to combat the spread of COVID-19.

As part of precautionary measures, worshippers were seen wearing masks and bringing their own prayer rugs.

"It was very important for the prayer to return, praise be to God, amid the precautionary measures. Everyone wears masks and keeps apart," one worshipper said.

“The occupation makes us bleed, and we need to heal not only from epidemics, but from this occupation as well,” said another.

Eid al-Adha or the ‘Festival of the Sacrifice,’ is the second of two globally celebrated holidays in Islam, the other being Eid Al-Fitr, with the former honouring Ibrahim or Abraham’s will to sacrifice his son to God before Jibra'il, or Gabriel’s intervention. Animals are often sacrificed on the holiday to remember Ibrahim’s offering.
